Cruffins are a delightful hybrid pastry combining the flaky layers of a croissant with the shape and convenience of a muffin. Made from buttery puff pastry, these treats are baked in a muffin pan and finished with a sweet sugar coating, offering a perfect balance of crispiness and softness in every bite.

Scale

Ingredients

  • 1 package of puff pastry (about 8 oz), thawed
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar, for coating

Instructions

  1. Prepare the dough: Roll out the thawed puff pastry on a lightly floured surface into a rectangle about 1/8 inch thick. Use a sharp knife or pizza cutter to slice the pastry into strips approximately 1 inch wide.
  2. Shape the Cruffins: Take each strip and lightly brush it with melted butter, then roll it up tightly from one end to the other, forming a spiral shape similar to a muffin or cupcake.
  3. Place in muffin pan: Set each rolled cruffin into a greased muffin pan, placing them upright so they keep their shape while baking.
  4. Bake: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the cruffins for 20-25 minutes or until they are puffed up and golden brown on the top and edges.
  5. Coat with sugar: Remove the cruffins from the oven and while they are still warm, brush them with additional melted butter and roll or sprinkle them generously with granulated sugar until fully coated.
  6. Cool and serve: Allow the cruffins to cool slightly before serving to enjoy the crispy sugar coating and flaky layers.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, sprinkle cinnamon with the sugar coating.
  • Use chilled butter for brushing if you want flakier layers.
  • These can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two days and enjoyed slightly warmed.
  • Try filling the cruffins with jam or pastry cream after baking for a delicious variation.
