Ingredients

Scale

Dough

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1 cup warm milk (about 110°F/43°C)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt

For Brushing

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted (for brushing rolls after baking)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm milk and let it sit for about 5 minutes until foamy. Add melted butter, sugar, and salt, then gradually stir in the flour until a soft dough forms.
  2. Knead the Dough: Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Alternatively, use a stand mixer with a dough hook on medium speed for about 6-7 minutes.
  3. First Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  4. Shape the Rolls: Punch down the risen dough to remove air bubbles. Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces and shape each into a round ball. Arrange the balls evenly spaced in a greased 9×13-inch baking pan.
  5. Second Rise: Cover the shaped rolls and let them rise again for 30 to 45 minutes until puffy and nearly doubled.
  6. Bake the Rolls: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the rolls for 15 to 20 minutes or until they are golden brown on top.
  7. Butter the Rolls: Remove rolls from the oven and immediately brush the tops with melted butter to give them a soft, shiny finish and extra flavor.
  8. Cool and Serve: Let the rolls cool slightly in the pan before serving warm. Enjoy your soft, buttery dinner rolls fresh for best taste.

Notes

  • For even softer rolls, use bread flour instead of all-purpose flour.
  • You can add an egg to the dough for a richer texture if desired.
  • Store leftover rolls in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or freeze for longer storage.
  • Reheat rolls wrapped in foil at 350°F (175°C) for 10 minutes to refresh.
  • Make sure milk is warm, not hot, to properly activate the yeast without killing it.
