Smash Burger Tacos Recipe

4.8 from 87 reviews

Smash Burger Tacos combine the juicy, flavorful goodness of classic smash burgers with the convenient, handheld appeal of tacos. Ground beef is smashed directly onto tortillas, cooked to a flavorful crust, topped with melted cheese and burger sauce, and folded to create a delicious fusion snack that’s perfect for a quick meal or casual gathering.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Smash Burger Tacos

  • 1 lb ground beef (preferably 80/20 mix for juiciness)
  • 6 small flour tortillas
  • 6 slices cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup burger sauce (store-bought or homemade)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Optional toppings: sliced pickles, shredded lettuce, diced onions

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Ground Beef: Divide the ground beef into 6 equal portions and lightly form into loose balls to make it easier to smash
  2. Heat the Skillet: Preheat a large non-stick or cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat until very hot.
  3. Smash the Beef: Place one beef ball on the hot skillet on top of a tortilla, then use a spatula or heavy press to flatten the beef firmly and evenly against the tortilla to create a thin patty. Season with salt and pepper.
  4. Cook the Patty: Let the beef cook undisturbed for about 2-3 minutes until the edges are crispy and a crust forms. Flip and immediately add a slice of cheese on top of the patty to melt as it finishes cooking, about 1-2 minutes.
  5. Assemble the Tacos: Remove the cooked smash burger on tortilla from the skillet. Drizzle burger sauce over the patty, add any optional toppings like pickles or onions, then fold tortilla like a taco.
  6. Repeat: Repeat the smashing and cooking process for the remaining beef balls and tortillas.
  7. Serve: Serve hot immediately for the best texture and flavor.

Notes

  • Using a hot skillet is crucial to get a crispy crust on the beef patty that mimics the smash burger texture.
  • Adjust seasoning and toppings based on preference; adding lettuce or pickles adds freshness and crunch.
  • Flour tortillas work best for folding without cracking, but corn tortillas can be used depending on your preference.
  • Allow the cheese to melt fully on the patty before removing from heat for optimal flavor and texture.
