This Pizza Grilled Cheese recipe combines the comforting gooeyness of a classic grilled cheese sandwich with the bold, savory flavors of a pepperoni pizza. Ingredients

Scale

Sandwich Ingredients

  • 4 slices of bread (sourdough, white, or whole wheat)
  • 2 tbsp butter (softened)
  • ½ cup marinara or pizza sauce
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 12 slices of turkey pepperoni (or your preferred topping)
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp Italian seasoning
  • 2 tbsp chopped fresh basil (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Bread: Spread a thin layer of softened butter on one side of each slice of bread. Then sprinkle the buttered side with garlic powder and Italian seasoning to add extra pizza-inspired flavor and ensure the bread toasts nicely.
  2. Assemble the Sandwich: Lay two slices of bread buttered side down on a flat surface. Spread marinara sauce onto the inside of each slice. Add a layer of shredded mozzarella followed by grated Parmesan cheese, turkey pepperoni slices, and any additional toppings if desired. Finally, top with the remaining two slices of bread, buttered side facing up.
  3. Toast the Sandwich: Heat a skillet or griddle over medium-low heat. Carefully place the sandwiches in the pan and cook each side for 3-4 minutes, pressing gently with a spatula to help the sandwich cook evenly and the cheese melt thoroughly. Flip carefully and continue cooking until the bread turns golden brown and the cheese is melted.
  4. Serve and Enjoy: Remove the sandwiches from the skillet and allow them to cool slightly for about a minute. Slice each sandwich in half and garnish with fresh chopped basil if using. Serve alongside extra marinara sauce for dipping for a perfect finish.

Notes

  • Use medium-low heat to prevent burning the bread before the cheese melts.
  • Substitute turkey pepperoni with any preferred pizza topping like vegetables or other meats.
  • For a vegetarian version, omit the pepperoni and add sautéed mushrooms or bell peppers.
  • Leftover sandwiches can be reheated in a skillet for the best texture.
  • Use a spatula to press gently to help the sandwich cook evenly and ensure all layers meld together nicely.
