Irish Potato Farl Recipe

4.5 from 74 reviews

Irish Potato Farls are a traditional Irish potato bread made from mashed potatoes, flour, salt, and butter. Rolled into a circle and cut into quarters, these farls are pan-fried to achieve a golden, slightly crisp exterior with a soft, fluffy inside. A staple in Irish breakfasts, especially the Ulster Fry, they are versatile and comforting, perfect served warm with butter, eggs, or as a side to hearty dishes.

Ingredients

Scale

Irish Potato Farl Ingredients

  • 2 cups (about 1 pound) mashed potatoes, cooled
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour, plus extra for dusting
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Combine Ingredients: In a large bowl, mix the mashed potatoes, flour, salt, and melted butter until a dough forms.
  2. Knead Dough: Lightly flour a work surface and turn the dough out. Gently knead it until smooth, being careful not to overwork it.
  3. Roll Out Dough: Roll the dough into a circle about 1/4 inch thick.
  4. Cut into Farls: Cut the dough circle into four equal wedges, called farls.
  5. Cook Farls: Heat a non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat with no oil needed. Cook each farl for 3–4 minutes per side, or until golden brown and slightly crisp on the outside.
  6. Serve Warm: Serve the farls warm, optionally with butter, eggs, or your favorite breakfast items.

Notes

  • Use leftover mashed potatoes cooled properly for best texture.
  • If dough is too sticky, add a little more flour gradually while kneading.
  • Farls can be frozen after cooking; reheat in a skillet for best texture.
  • Serve with traditional Irish breakfasts or as a snack with spreads like cream cheese or peanut butter.
