For the Gnocchi
For the Creamy Mushroom Sauce
- 250g mushrooms, sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 2 tbsp olive oil or butter
- Salt, to taste
- Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
- Optional: fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
- Cook the Gnocchi: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the gnocchi and cook according to the package instructions, usually until they float to the surface, about 2-3 minutes. Drain and set aside.
- Sauté the Mushrooms: In a large skillet, heat olive oil or butter over medium heat. Add the sliced mushrooms and cook until they release their moisture and start to brown, about 5-7 minutes.
- Add Garlic: Stir in the minced garlic and sauté for an additional 1-2 minutes until fragrant, taking care not to burn the garlic.
- Make the Cream Sauce: Pour in the heavy cream and stir to combine. Let it simmer gently for 3-5 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.
- Toss Gnocchi with Sauce: Add the cooked gnocchi to the skillet with the creamy mushroom sauce. Gently toss everything together to coat the gnocchi evenly with the sauce.
- Serve: Transfer to serving plates and garnish with chopped fresh parsley if desired. Serve immediately while warm.
Notes
- For a lighter version, substitute heavy cream with half-and-half or a plant-based cream alternative.
- Fresh mushrooms like cremini or button mushrooms work best; you can also mix different mushroom varieties for more depth of flavor.
- Do not overcook gnocchi as they can become mushy; cook until just tender and they float to the top of the boiling water.
- Add Parmesan cheese sprinkled on top for an extra touch of savory flavor, if desired.
