For the Patties and Onions
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- Salt, to taste
- Pepper, to taste
- 1 tablespoon butter or oil (for cooking onions)
For the Sandwich
- 8 slices rye bread
- 8 slices Swiss cheese
- Butter, for spreading on bread
- Prepare the Onions: Heat butter or oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onions and cook slowly, stirring occasionally, for about 15-20 minutes until they are soft and caramelized. Set aside.
- Form and Cook the Patties: Season the ground beef with salt and pepper, then form into four evenly sized patties. Cook the patties in the same skillet over medium-high heat for about 3-4 minutes per side or until cooked through to your desired doneness. Remove from heat and set aside.
- Assemble the Sandwiches: Butter one side of each slice of rye bread. On the unbuttered side, place a slice of Swiss cheese, then a cooked beef patty, a generous portion of caramelized onions, and another slice of Swiss cheese. Top with another slice of rye bread, buttered side out.
- Grill the Sandwiches: Heat a clean skillet or griddle over medium heat. Place the assembled sandwiches in the skillet and cook for 3-4 minutes on each side or until the bread is golden brown and crispy, and the cheese has melted. Press gently with a spatula to ensure even grilling.
- Serve: Remove the sandwiches from the skillet, let them cool slightly, then slice in half and serve warm.
Notes
- For extra flavor, you can add a bit of Worcestershire sauce or garlic powder to the beef before forming patties.
- If you prefer sweeter onions, add a pinch of sugar while caramelizing.
- Use a heavy skillet or griddle to get an even, crisp toast on the bread.
- Serve with pickles or a side salad for a complete meal.
