4.9 from 147 reviews

Classic Bread Pudding is a comforting dessert made by soaking bread in a sweet custard mixture of milk, eggs, and sugar, then baked until golden and set. This timeless recipe transforms simple ingredients into a warm, rich pudding with a soft interior and slightly crisp top.

Ingredients

Scale

Bread Pudding

  • 6 cups day-old bread, cut into cubes
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 3 large eggs
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to prepare for baking the pudding.
  2. Prepare the Custard Mixture: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and salt until fully combined and smooth.
  3. Soak the Bread: Add the cubed bread to the custard mixture, ensuring all pieces are well coated. Let the bread soak for about 10 minutes, allowing it to absorb the liquid completely.
  4. Transfer to Baking Dish: Lightly grease a baking dish and pour the soaked bread and custard mixture into it, spreading evenly.
  5. Bake the Pudding: Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 45-55 minutes, or until the custard is set, and the top is golden brown.
  6. Cool and Serve: Remove from oven and let the bread pudding cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm, optionally with a drizzle of cream or a dusting of powdered sugar.

Notes

  • Day-old or slightly stale bread works best to absorb the custard without becoming mushy.
  • You can add raisins, nuts, or chocolate chips for variation.
  • For a richer pudding, substitute half of the milk with cream.
  • Serve with whipped cream, vanilla sauce, or a scoop of ice cream for extra indulgence.
