Dough Ingredients
- 3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 cup warm milk
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large egg
Filling and Topping
- 1 cup pecans, chopped
- 1 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1/2 cup caramel sauce
- Prepare the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm milk, yeast, and sugar. Let sit for about 5 minutes until frothy. Add melted butter, egg, salt, and gradually mix in flour until a soft dough forms. Knead the dough for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Cover and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 to 1.5 hours.
- Make the Caramel Pecan Sauce: In a separate bowl, mix together the melted butter, brown sugar, and caramel sauce. Stir in chopped pecans evenly, which will become the topping for the rolls.
- Assemble the Sticky Buns: Roll out the risen dough on a floured surface into a rectangle about 12 x 18 inches. Brush the surface lightly with melted butter. Spread caramel pecan sauce over the dough evenly. Starting from the long edge, tightly roll the dough into a log and cut into 12 equal slices.
- Prepare for Baking: Pour any remaining caramel pecan sauce into a greased 9×13 inch baking pan. Arrange the rolls cut side up in the pan closely together. Cover and let the rolls rise for another 30-45 minutes until puffy.
- Bake the Rolls: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the sticky buns for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown and cooked through.
- Serve: Allow the sticky buns to cool in the pan for 5-10 minutes. Then invert the pan onto a serving platter so the caramel pecan sauce coats the buns. Serve warm for the best gooey texture and flavor.
Notes
- Use unsalted butter to control the saltiness of the caramel pecan topping.
- Allow dough to rise in a warm, draft-free environment to ensure proper rising.
- Leftover sticky buns can be reheated in a microwave for a warm, fresh taste.
- Chopped pecans can be toasted lightly before mixing in the caramel sauce for extra flavor.
